Job summary:
Responsible for providing support and assistance to the dispatch team in a trucking office. This apprenticeship role is designed to help you gain valuable industry experience and develop the necessary skills to pursue a career in trucking dispatch. You will work closely with experienced dispatchers, learning the day-to-day operations and contributing to the efficient management of trucking operations
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the dispatch team in coordinating and scheduling truck drivers for pick-up and delivery of goods, ensuring timely and efficient transportation.
- Learn and utilize dispatch software and systems to update and maintain accurate records of trucking activities, including driver assignments, routes, and delivery status.
- Communicate effectively with truck drivers, providing them with detailed instructions, updates, and any changes to their assigned routes or delivery schedules.
- Monitor and track the progress of truck drivers using GPS systems and other tracking tools, ensuring adherence to established timelines and customer requirements.
- Collaborate with warehouse personnel to coordinate loading and unloading of trucks, ensuring proper sequencing and organization of shipments.
- Assist in resolving any issues or challenges that may arise during transportation, such as route changes, traffic delays, or mechanical breakdowns, by communicating with drivers and offering appropriate solutions.
- Learn to optimize the use of available resources, including drivers, equipment, and fuel, to maximize operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Support the dispatch team in maintaining accurate records of driver hours, mileage, and fuel consumption for compliance with industry regulations.
- Assist in handling customer inquiries, complaints, and requests, providing excellent customer service and maintaining a professional and courteous demeanor.
- Learn about safety procedures and regulations in the trucking industry, promoting a culture of safety and ensuring drivers adhere to all applicable rules and guidelines.
- Continuously seek opportunities to learn and develop skills related to trucking operations, dispatching, and logistics.
- After-hours: This position will require that you be on an on-call rotation for nights and weekends.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent qualification, preferred.
- Experience: Experience in dispatch or a similar role within the logistics or transportation industry preferred.
- Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in using computers and basic software applications. Familiarity with dispatch software and transportation management systems (TMS). Samsara preferred.
- Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
- Adaptability: Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and handle stress in a fast-paced environment.
- Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, ensuring clarity, professionalism, and effectiveness in all interactions.

- Working Conditions:
- Hours: Full-time 45 plus, position with the possibility of extended hours based on operational needs.
- Environment: Office setting.
Physical Requirements / Work Environment:
- Ability to sit and / or stand for 8-10 consecutive hours per day
- Ability to walk, talk and hear, use finger and hand dexterity, bend, stoop, kneel, climb and crouch.
- Ability to lift up to 15 lbs.
- Ability to travel when needed.
- Ability to adapt to a flexible schedule as needed to ensure continuous operations.
Office hours: 8 am - 7 pm
Hours: 40 -45 hr
